We live in a violent, dangerous world, and the threats we face are real. However, being born again gives us a circle of protection that others don’t have. Putting our faith in Jesus and trusting in His deliverance from trouble when it shows up gives us confidence that He’ll keep us safe. When others are worried and fearful, we’re not operating in fear because we walk with a God who has a million ways to protect our lives.
When Adam and Eve ate from the wrong tree in the garden of Eden, sin entered the earth and curses resulted from their choice. Violence was one of those curses, as evidenced when Cain killed Abel. It took Jesus’ coming to earth and shedding His blood to redeem us back from the spiritual death that they brought on mankind. The sacrifice He made opened the door for us to pass from death to life.
What most people are unaware of is that we operate under a set of spiritual laws that God established. There’s the law of sin and death that operates through fear, and the law of life in Christ Jesus that operates by faith. These are as real as the natural law of gravity, and none of these can be changed. One of the curses that stemmed from the law of sin and death that Jesus redeemed us from is the curse of dying early.
This curse involves having doubts about our lives and things happening that throw fear into us about our security. God wants to be involved in securing our lives; He doesn’t want us to have a shaky foundation but a sure, solid one. He’s our security and our source, and angels are a part of His plan to establish and maintain our safety. Angels are one of the ways that God carries out our deliverance. “Isn’t it obvious that all angels are sent to help out with those lined up to receive salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14, MSG).
The Bible says that God gives His angels charge over us to keep and protect us wherever we go; they’ll bear us up with their hands lest we dash our foot against a stone. They’ve been commanded to guard and watch over us in whatever we do. Angels hearken and respond to the Word of God; we therefore must be careful to speak words of faith in agreement with Him, and not speak words of fear. Speaking fear, and saying things like we’re afraid we’re going to get sick and die, activates the law of sin and death and attracts to us the very thing we fear.
Angels are surrounding us to block harm from reaching us; with everything going on in our external environment, this is definitely not the time to let our angelic assistants lie dormant with no assignment. We need their intervention because it’s impossible for us to secure our own lives. They figure prominently in our salvation. Like what happened with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, even when we go through our own fiery furnace, we’ll come out unscathed and not even smelling like smoke.
We must constantly remind ourselves of the angelic assistance we’ve been given. “God has set his throne in heaven; he rules over us all. He’s the King! So bless God, you angels, ready and able to fly at his bidding, quick to hear and do what he says. Bless God, all you armies of angels, alert to respond to whatever he wills” (Psalm 103:19-21, MSG). The angels of God stand ready to minister to us. They’re not off somewhere taking a nap, but waiting to spring into action and carry out God’s plan in our lives. Our covenant with Him includes this level of protection and care.
Having this promise of protection from God gives us a supernatural safety net. This net will only work when we obey His Word; under the covenant of grace, standing firm in faith is how we obey. “God’s angel sets up a circle of protection around us while we pray” (Psalm 34:7, MSG). In the case of Job, there was an invisible fence around him to protect him when the devil attacked. This is good news because we have that same fence encircling us.
This circle is available for the people of God, right now. We abide in the secret place of His protection; the world doesn’t know how to get there, or even that it exists. This place was made available more than two thousand years ago, and we can access it any time we need to. “The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them” (Psalm 34:7). Cultivating a lifestyle of listening and obeying God is a major part of our protection because knowing where we’re supposed to be—and exactly when we’re supposed to be there—may just save our lives.
There’s a devil loose in the world, and his plan is to steal, kill, and destroy. It’s not enough to just cross our fingers and hope for the best. In this unsafe world, the safest place to be is in the will of God. We need to consult Him about everything, even the little things going on that may seem insignificant or trivial.
Consulting God sets us apart. When everyone else has gone on and they’re doing their own thing, following His voice warns us about things hidden from others. It’s all about trusting God, who is committed to His children. This applies to every area of our daily lives, whether we’re traveling on vacation, seeing our kids off to school, working hard to meet deadlines, or taking care of elderly parents.
In these end times, there’s plenty to fear for those who don’t know God or hear His voice. Our enemy is upset and knows his days are numbered, so he’s trying to inflict as much damage as he can in the time he has left. Thankfully, believers are perfectly safe. Living under the law of life in Christ Jesus lets the angels assigned to us consistently shield us from evil.
