Whether we’re referring to the body of Christ, to a marriage, or to relationships in general, the biblical definition of being the head differs sharply from the world’s definition. The New Testament definition of the word “head” means source, base, or a derivation of something. Being the “boss” doesn’t mean lording over others or sitting back waiting to be served; the scriptural definition of this is a willingness to serve and make sacrifices for others, like Jesus did. Servanthood based on biblical equality isn’t gender-based but based on everyone submitting one to another. Neither is biblical submission based on marital status; single people are to submit to God and His Word, and to those placed in authority to watch over them. In this context, being the head means that there’s no room for inequality or domination. This type of equality extends to everyone.
